Students with physical disabilities are often intimidated and teased by
other students. Usually normal students do not play or talk with them, they
are left out alone. In most cases these students are called by humiliating
names due to which they become victim of self pity. Sometimes such students
are kicked and hit or frightened by other students too. They become scared
to go to school. Sometimes due to depression they stop to eat or sleep
properly. In extreme cases, these students lose all hopes to live. Most
often students with physical disabilities, lose all their confidence. They
become too weak to sustain peer pressure. If proper guidance is not provided
to them at early stages, they start to face psychological problems too. All
the hatred which, they have received from society, gradually start
exhibiting in their behavior. They start trying to hide their flair. They
become rude and arrogant. Sometimes these students start to irritate their
parents and teachers too.
We can save such students from becoming victim of such psychological
problems, by adopting certain strategies. Firstly teachers should teach
students with physical disabilities primary self help skills. Teachers
should take the help of latest technology to promote a feeling of
independence in them. For example such
students should be provided with a slant board for placing reading
material on it, pencil grip for having firm grip on pen or pencil, a tape
recorder for catching up lectures etc. With little technical aid, these
students can independently have a brilliant academic career. Second step is
to protect these students’ from ruthless social behaviors until they are not
strong enough to face it. For this teacher should be so alert that no child
can tease or bully other. Teachers should counsel other students to be nice
and friendly with students with physical disabilities. On the other hand
teachers and parents should mentally prepare gifted students how to react if
someone teases them. Teachers and parents should give so much confidence to
such students that they can easily ignore humiliating social behaviors.
Teachers and parents should be extremely friendly and motivating with such
students so that they can easily share their problems with them. For
relaxation teachers should divert attention of such students towards indoor
games rather than outdoor. Healthy competition should be arranged so that
such students can easily portray their talent.
With little efforts and wise usage of technology we can help students with
physical disabilities to achieve academic success.
