Term Paper on Nostalgia

’Cambridge International Dictionary of English defines nostalgia as “a feeling of pleasure and sometimes slight sadness at the same time as you think about things that happened in the past”. Majority of us are nostalgic and so am I. I still remember those beautiful days of my childhood when life was filled with happiness and laughter. There were no responsibilities and obligations and life was smooth, sweet and colorful. I was the only child of my parents and thus, the focal point of their love and attention. My loving parents were everything for me but the person who was even dearer to me than my parents was my Grandmother who actually brought me up. She used to feed me, bathe me and dress me up. Although we had a servant for doing the domestic work but it was Mom and Grandma who did most of the things done for me. Our house, stretched over an area of about one-acre, was comprised of many rooms and a beautiful garden. I used to play cricket with Grandma in this garden. I always used to yell whenever I hit a big shot on a ball thrown by her. In our home, one room had been prepared as my bedroom, which was full of toys, cartoons and other beautiful posters. After the dinner, it was this room where Grandma used to tell me exciting stories until I went to sleep. Again, in the morning it was she who would to wake me up.

Most of my childhood evenings and holidays were spent on the bank of the small river, which was hardly half a kilometer away from our home. I used to ride to the riverbank on my bicycle. There was a beautiful park on the riverbank, which used to be always jam-packed on the weekends and holidays. It was Grandma who mostly took me to the park for playing and recreation. There was a small zoo in the park, full of beautiful birds and other animals. The animals in the zoo that fascinated me the most were tigers, lions and monkeys. In the evenings we also used to go to riverbank for fishing, using fishing net and fishing rod as well.

My grandma was expecting a bright future for me and she used to tell me that one day I would become a great man. When I turned four, grandma and my parents took me to a nearby school and admitted me there. Then it became a routine for the Grandma to take me to the school and bring me back. She also helped me doing the homework.
The saddest day in my life came some twenty-two years ago when one morning we found Grandma dead in her bed.
