Contrary to other essays, an expository essay seeks to explain and describe a specific topic using the factual information without taking any position. The purpose of an expository essay is to describe the topic as it is not to prove or disprove it. Present your topic before the reader in cogent and logical way. For example: describe the changes wrought by two world wars fought in the history of man kind. You, as a writer of an expository essay, have to state the documented facts regarding these wars. You are not supposed to take side of the blocks involved in the deadly wars. Here are the guidelines to help you write a winning expository essay.

1. Topic selection
Look for a topic that interests you and suits your writing style. Make sure that you understand the selected topic very well. Don’t narrow down or broaden the scope of your topic.

2. Search the topic meticulously
Expository essay is simply a description of the recorded events or occurrences in the annals of history. For example: expository essay on the two deadly world wars. You have to present the description about these wars. Material for writing description is already available in plenty of published books, journals and magazines.

3. Write a thesis statement
It should be specific and standard neither too narrow nor too broader. This is the foundation stone of the entire expository essay. Your thesis statement should be like” the Second World War paved way for the decolonization of world. You have simply to state the facts how it became the corner stone of decolonization process. You have not to prove or disprove whether the Second World War was a driving forces behind decolonization. Write the facts as they are without taking any position.

4. Organize the essay
a. Introduction:
This paragraph seeks to gain the interest of the reader. To keep reader’s interest, start with captivating statement. State the thesis of your essay to provide hint to reader right at the outset what is inside the body paragraphs. Tell succinctly what you want to tell.

b. Body paragraphs:
Every statement and paragraph in the body should have relevance with the thesis statement. It should not deviate from thesis. Don’t equivocate, be specific and avoid extending the topic to an unmanageable level. Tell what you wanted to tell in detail.
c. Writing conclusion:

Wrap up the essay without digressing the thesis and arguments made in essay. Just restate your thesis and important points presented in essay. Tell what you told.
