How to Encounter Plagiarism
Phenomena like dishonesty and theft, no matter to what relation we talk
about, will never be able to make their place in a list of behaviors,
considered acceptable in society. In fact, these are present among those
behaviors, which are in total defiance with society’s norms and values.
Although the intensity of disliking these negative aspects of society is
pretty high, but there always exists such people, who constantly look for
ways of cheating in whatever area of work they are put in. It is the same
group of population, which has founded base of cheating in the field of
‘writing’ too. This callous act is popularly known as Plagiarism. In simple
terms, plagiarism is imitating words and views of some other writer(s) and
presenting them as one's own work.
It is really unfortunate that as adoption of creativity in every aspect of
life is being promoted by majority of world’s population, there still exists
a considerable mass of individuals, who take pride in practicing plagiarism.
Worseness of this issue can be gauged from an inconvenient fact that instead
of showing some disgustingness to this problem, its acceptance is seriously
growing among people present in almost every corner of the world. The reason
is quite obvious; it much easier to copy and paste or reproduce anyone
else’s hard slog than to give your time and energy in writing something new.
Now copy and pasting is not a writing crime as such, but when you will copy
and paste something, it is very unlikely that you will give credit to the
originator of that content. Again the reason is very clear; if you do so,
you will not be rewarded for the work for which you have used the content,
in a way you would have probably been rewarded, if you have created
something of your own.
Since appearance of the corrupt act like plagiarism on world’s scenario,
enough has tried to be done towards, raising moral standards of people and
convincing them not to indulge themselves in this immoral activity.
Regrettably, that hasn’t proved to be effective till recent era. Over the
past few years, successful practical measures have been taken to stop this
dishonest doing. Big names like Google, feeling themselves as primarily
responsible, for facilitating plagiarists, have financed development of
different IT tools and software and on the other hand, have encouraged
readers to demand softcopies of whatever work is presented to them by
writers.
In addition to giving tough time to deliberate plagiarists, it’s also
necessary to teach about plagiarism to that group of a population, which
does it unintentionally. This group comprises of people, who, while doing
plagiarism, are unaware that they are involved in some wrongful exercise.
Such a set of people should be comprehensively educated about plagiarism and
its aftermaths. Practicing of novel
research and writing skills should be extensively promoted among
students and writers.
Teachers belonging to different levels of education and other
stakeholders can play key role in this regard.
The simplest of all the actions, which could be taken to encounter
plagiarism by everyone, is to be honest in giving credit to others.
