The tragic events of 11 September made a great effect of the overall education system of the US. The students who were most effected were the ones who had ESL or English as a second language. The US government took all the measures for security reasons that the foreigners should not visit USA for a while. The issuance of visas was also restricted. No new student visa was issued until the visa officer was completely satisfied that that there will be no threat what so ever, and no one will get hurt due to his presence in the United States.

Some added restrictions have been placed on foreign students. All the international students or ESL students are required to produce at least 2.0 GPA and they have to pass 101. They are also required to complete a minimum of 12 units every quarter. The 2.0 grade point average is not justified for the foreign students. They were not part of any terrorism act and in fact they are the most docile type of student any country can have.

These kinds of treatments are done to the people who are proved to be criminals or having a bad record. The people coming from the other parts of the world to learn new language or professions should be treated with honor and respect. Though working with ESL students are most rewarding but sometimes it becomes a little bit harder to work with them because of their less conversation skill and the person talking to them might be relying on their common sense and knowledge to comprehend them and their ideas. Most of the new ESL students find it very hard to adjust to new language and culture. The students who are homesick should be told that this condition will eventually pass and they will be in no trouble at all. Under all these conditions and circumstances the new restrictions of passing 101 with 2.0 or higher before taking the second writing classes for their AA degree in a very hard blow on them. In this regard we took an interview of one of the ESL students and it ran as follows:

Interviewer: So what do you think about the new law? That is you have to pass 101 with a 2.0 or higher before you are allowed to take second writing class for AA degree.
Student: Yes! It is a very big problem for the foreign students. On 11th September a big problem occurred and due to that incident all the students from foreign country are punished without having valid reason.
 

Interviewer: So! In your opinion what should be the solution?
Student: It is very easy. Let us live like other Americans. Give us the same respect, which we used to receive before 11 September. We are students here. We already have host of other problems. As a foreign student sometimes it is not very easy to obtain the required GPA or passing marks. Any restriction from the government means it is a direct interference into our affairs. As foreign students we are already paying much more fees and accommodation charges. Under these circumstances it will not be a good act to discourage the millions of foreign students who are currently enrolled in various schools, universities of US.
 

Interviewer: Very nice you have very valid points to support your cause.
Student: Thank you.
Now to have a view from the other side an interview of the librarian was taken which went as follows:
 

Interviewer: Working with ESL students is a very rewarding experience, but due to their lack of communication skills and other drawback do you still find your job thrilling?
Librarian: Yes! They are very exciting people. Every foreign national is coming from a different environment and culture. They are very nice people and they are spending a lot of money in our country and in fact they are the best financial help, which is available to the universities all around the US.
 

Interviewer: What do you say about the restrictions placed on the students that they are not allowed to take second writing class for AA degree, unless they pass 101 with a 2.0 or higher?
Librarian: See, I am working in such a place where I meet all the students and know their ability and capability. In my opinion a person who is not familiar with our language and who is also new to our customs should not be placed under any restrictions. The minimum passing GPA should be way less than the native Americans, as they are not going to seek any job in our country. They only learn the language, will learn some new skill and than they will move back to their country. Since after 11 September the threat of terrorism has increased, so it is proper to take all the precautions before giving entry to any new students. The old students are already here and they have no criminal record, so there is no justification to put extra burden for them to pursue their studies.
