This book is just a personal narrative, and not a big history or a philosophical dissertation. It is a record of several years of multicolored vagabondizing, and its object is rather to help the relaxed reader while away an idle hour than strike him with metaphysics, or drive him with science. Still, there is information in the volume; information relating to an interesting episode in the history of the Far West, about which no books have been written by persons who were on the ground in person, and saw the happenings of the time with their own eyes. I allude to the rise, growth and culmination of the silver-mining fever in Nevada -a curious episode, in some regards; the only one, of its unusual kind, that has taken place in the land; and the only one, certainly, that is likely to occur in it.

‘Roughing It’ has been so distinctively pictured. It was nice to get away from the anxieties of things; and they repeated the experiment. They made a walking trip to Yosemite, carrying their packs, camping and fishing in that far, enormous isolation, which in those days few human beings had ever looked in on at all. Such trips tailored a delicious relief from the frenetic struggle around tunnel and shaft. Amid mountain-peaks and giant forests and by tumbling falls the search for gold hardly looked worth while. More than once that summer he went alone into the wilderness to find his self-control and to get away completely from humankind.
